Spotify Joins Forces with London City Lionesses and She Plays Football to Increase Grassroots Participation in Girls’ Football
Spotify has linked up with London City Lionesses and She Plays Football to empower the next generation of girls who are passionate about football. The aim is to increase the diversity of grassroots participation and provide once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to girls who aspire to play and access the beautiful game.
Across the summer, starting from May 15, up to 600 girls in Barnet and surrounding North London areas will be offered free 90-minute football training sessions every weekday from 4pm-7pm at Powerleague Barnet with facilities also being provided in partnership with Middlesex University and the London Sports Institute.
By working with local schools in Barnet, Spotify’s She Plays Football campaign will be able to identify and highlight where girls in the community are most underserved in the sport. These free community training sessions will be conducted by professional coaches, and London City Lionesses’ players Karin Muya, Charlotte Fleming, Lily Agg and Atlanta Primus will make special appearances to inspire and motivate girls to excel in the sport.
Some of the girls who participate in the community training program will have the opportunity to play in weekly mini-league matches held at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium every Sunday morning until July 16.
Off the back of these incredible summer activities for girls in North London and at the start of the grassroots football season on September 4th, London City and She Plays Football will introduce a new club – the ‘London City Strikers’ – which will consist of academy level players and a series of teams for players aged 7-12 to play in the London Capital Girls League and/or the Junior Premier League for the 2023/24 season.
This initiative aligns with the UK government’s announcement earlier this year to provide equal access to football for all schoolgirls, following the England team’s open letter to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. The letter was signed by all 23 players just days after their historical Euros wins last summer, and voiced the squad’s collective belief on how to ensure that boys and girls enjoy the same level of access to sport in school.
With only 46% of schools providing the same extracurricular opportunities to girls, Spotify’s partnership is a crucial step to ensure girls receive the highest standard of access to football ensuring a first-rate experience for all participants.
Along with access to excellent coaching sessions, players accessing Spotify’s upcoming campaign will also have access to sheplaysfootball.com, which offers foundational digital football-related training, as well as access to strength and conditioning coaching, nutrition workshops, and mental performance-based activities. This programme will equip girls with the tools they need to enjoy the game to the fullest and prepare for a future in the sport.
